Celebrating 40+ Years

BSIMA was formed in 1977 by student parents in an effort to bring affordable instrument rental to all band students.

What the BSIMA does:

  • Provide instruments to all Grade 7 & 8 students at low cost (annual usage fee currently set at $125)
  • Continue to provide the more expensive instruments to students in Grade 9 through12
  • Provide instruments to students who wish to play more than one
  • Further subsidize instrument usage fees for families in need

How we Operate:

BSIMA’s annual budget is in excess of $130,000 with about half of the necessary funding coming from the Brandon School Division.

The parent-run organization provides high quality instruments for a low annual fee by supplementing BSD’s funding for the band programs through volunteer work, fundraising, and the collection of instrument usage fees.

During the regular Board Meeting on Monday, May 13, 2019, our Board of Trustees approved a motion authorizing the Brandon School Division (BSD) to provide additional financial support together with funding from the Brandon Schools Instrumental Music Association (BSIMA) for the 2019-2020 school year. The additional funding from BSD and the BSIMA will make band more accessible for all students, and make it easier for students to use a quality instrument at an affordable or subsidized rate.

The Instrumental Music (also known as “Band”) Program is offered to all Grade 7 to Grade 12 students in the Division. Grade 7-8 students become part of either the East Side Band Program at Earl Oxford School or the West Middle Band Program at Waverly Park School.

Students registering for Band have the option of supplying their own instrument or renting an instrument for the year from BSIMA. The instrument usage fee for all instruments for the year is $125.00. All instruments will now be available for grade 7 and 8 students. Students who play oboe, bass clarinet, bassoon, French horn, euphonium, tuba, string bass, or percussion can continue to rent from BSIMA through Grade 12.

All students are welcome in our band program. Financial assistance will be provided for any student or family in need.
